Nestled at the bottom of Mt. Takakura, the Geku (Outer Shrine) enshrines Toyouke Omikami, the god of agriculture and industry, who is also said to be responsible for the meals of the sun goddess Amaterasu Ōmikami. Shogū, the main sanctuary building, is also surrounded by pile-fences like the Naiku (Inner Shrine), and its architectural style is called "Yuiitsu-Shinmei-zukuri." The Kaguraden, Kujoden and Imiyaden halls are along Sando Street, and Kiyomorikusu, a massive ancient tree associated with the Envoy of Taira no Kiyomori, looms above the path. Across the street, there is Magatama Pond, where irises bloom in the spring. The Naiku and Geku stand at a distance of 5 kilometers from each other. Visiting the Geku first and Naiku second is the traditional, old-fashioned way to visit the Grand Shrine of Ise.

Officially referred to simply as "Jingū" (the Shrine), the Grand Shrine of Ise
is in fact a general term that encompasses 125 Shinto shrines centered around
two main shrines, the Naiku (Kotai-jingu Shrine) for the Imperial goddess and
the Geku (Toyoukedai-jingu Shrine) for the goddess of industry. By the Isuzu
River, the Naiku enshrines the Sun Goddess Amaterasu Ōmikami. It is said that
Naiku was built during the Emperor Suinin-Tenno period, and that the custom
called "Sengū-no-gi," a reconstruction ceremony, has been conducted every 20 years since the HakuŌ period. In 2013, the ceremony will be performed for the 62nd time. Across the Uji Bridge lies a spiritual sanctuary where the sounds of the strolling visitors' footsteps on the gravel echo through deep cedar forests.

In the old days, there were people called onshi who performed purification rites, known as "O-harai." The name Oharai-machi comes from this. The area is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants, and the street attracts people who have just visited the shrine. On the corner, there is Okage-yokocho.
This is a commercial complex that embodies the nostalgic towns of the Edo and Meiji periods. The streets have a festival-like atmosphere, full of Ise's well-established confectioneries, local flavored restaurants and crowds of people. The incomplete, well-fortified Iga Ueno-jo Castle, also known as Hakuho-jo (White Phoenix Castle), has an elegant appearance. The original castle tower of Iga Ueno-jo had five stories. Just before its completion, it was destroyed by a storm and was never reconstructed. Today's castle tower is a three-story wooden building, constructed in 1935. It's a tower complex with a two-story small tower. The stone walls surrounding the castle are said to be some of the highest stone walls in Japan, and were chosen as scenery for the film "Kagemusha."
