The Museum opened in 1895 to protect and exhibit art works and artifacts relating to Buddhism. Japan's second oldest museum, the Nara National Museum is located adjacent to Todaiji and Kofukuji Temples and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Known for its vast collection of Buddhist art works, the Museum has two buildings: the Original Museum Building, which has been designated a Japanese important cultural property, and the new building comprising West and East Wings. The new building is used for special exhibitions such as the "Shoso-in exhibition."

| Kasuga Taisha Shrine |
This is the most famous shrine in Nara, with its large tabernacle painted in beautiful vermilion. The god of the shrine is worshiped as a provider of good fortune and protector of travelers. There are lines of stone lanterns along the front approach and bronze lanterns are hung along the cloister. At the Homotsu-den (treasury) various items are exhibited, including national treasures and important cultural properties. The garden is planted with nearly 300 kinds of flowers and plants, including trees featured in Man'yo-shu (oldest collection of Japanese poems) and wisterias, the symbol of the Shine.

| Gango-ji Temple |
Gango-ji is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan. Of the Temple's buildings constructed 1,300 years ago, only two structures remain on the premises. These are the main building called "Gokuraku-bo-" (room of paradise) and a Zen practicing room, both of which are designated as national treasures. These buildings once served as accommodation rooms for monks. Located in the old Nara area, the buildings' ancient construction materials and roof tiles have been miraculously well preserved, showing the historical significance of Nara.

| Ashibi no Sato Restaurant |
This Japanese restaurant is attached to Ashibi-ya Honpo, a nara-zuke (pickles seasoned with sake lees) shop with history of 1,200 years. The restaurant offers authentic Japanese dishes in various dining spaces such as tatami rooms, warehouse-like rooms and open-air seats. Customer can enjoy tasty food at a location they prefer. The restaurant also holds one-person shows of art works and concerts while selling nara-zuke and handicraft products of Nara.

| Fukuchi-in Temple |
Along with Jurin-in Temple, a small temple just outside the Nara-machi area once enjoyed great popularity as a center for worship of Jizo (the guardian deity of travelers and children).
A famous large Jizo Bosatsu statue enshrined in the temple is nearly 3 meters high. There are numerous small Jizo statues on the halo behind the statue. Both statue and main building are designated important cultural properties.

| Jurin-in Temple |
Located in Nara-machi, an area of old buildings, this temple and its enshrined Jizo and other gods have been long worshiped by local people. The temple is also known as a "stone temple" because of its stone god statues and many other cultural properties made of stone. Located in the Hondo (main building) is a stone room called "Sekibutsu-gan," whose interior is decorated with many embossed carvings of Buddha statues.

| Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park |
An admission-free amusement park on top of Mt. Ikoma, where visitors can enjoy 23 kinds of rides. The attractions include the airplane tower, with a good view of Osaka Bay, and the Wild Storm, an exciting free-fall experience. Amusing sightseeing cable cars shaped like dogs and cats are available to ride to the Park.

| Hozan-ji Temple |
The
temple has been worshiped by local people as "Shoden San," a god of commerce.
Many people also visit the Temple to make a pledge to stop drinking or a wish
to prevent their spouses from having extramarital affairs. Wish makers offer
the Temple wooden plates on which humorous pictures are drawn, along with the
wishes. There are attractions such as Shishi-kaku, a western-style guesthouse
on the premises of the Temple that is filled with smoke from incense sticks burned
to purify the site. Souvenir shops line the stone steps from HŌZANJI Sta.
