One of Osaka's downtowns, the Minami (South) district⁠—centered around the areas of Namba, Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi⁠—is a spectacular neon-lit center of food, shopping, and nightlife. The city of Nara's historic central area is sure to charm visitors with the meticulously-preserved traditional townhouses and their charming tiled roofs found throughout the narrow lanes. Many of the former residences have been converted into museums, giving visitors a window into the lives of the Japanese in the Edo and Meiji Eras (17th- to 19th-century), alongside modern coffee shops, galleries, and boutiques.

Gion is Kyoto's traditional entertainment district, home to geisha (known as "geiko" here), tea houses, and haute cuisine. Home to the tallest pagoda in Japan, the temple of Toji is a registered World Heritage site. Particularly during cherry blossom season when the grounds are illuminated at night, its five-storied pagoda amidst trees in full bloom are truly a sight to behold. Its monthly flea market ("Kobo-ichi") is popular among locals and tourists alike.

With nearly sixty rides and attractions to enjoy, Japan's largest amusement park offers fun for the whole family. Thrill-seekers will be in heaven with a total of twelve jet coasters—among the most in all Japan—including the Steel Dragon 2000, recognized by Guiness as one of the longest roller coasters in all the world. Stop and smell the flowers in spring, marvel at the dragonfly population in summer, let the stunning hues of its leaves sweep you off your feet in autumn, and then stick around for the skiing in winter!
