A World Heritage site that dates from the 7th century, Yakushiji is one of Japan's oldest temples. Though many of the structures have been rebuilt after fires, the East Pagoda is a National Treasure that has survived through eras. At the Genjo-sanzoin Garan across the road, you can view the marvelous Wall Painting of the Great Tang of the Western Regions by celebrated Nihon-ga artist Ikuo Hirayama.
