Founded in the early 7th century by Prince Shotoku, known for promoting Buddhism in Japan, this World Heritage site contains the some of the world's oldest surviving wooden structures: a majestic gate, the main hall housing Japan's oldest Buddhist sculptures, and a five-story pagoda. The Gallery of Temple Treasures is a more recent addition, built to house the temple's impressive collection of religious art.
