Rules and Manners on Kintetsu Railway Trains

What are the fare classifications?

■ Adult: Aged 12 (junior high school student) or older
■ Child: Aged 6 (elementary school student) to 11
  Each child fare is half price of the adult fare, rounded up to the nearest 10 yen.
■ Preschool-age child (ages 1 to 5):
Passengers under 6 are free of charge; however, a child ticket is required in the following cases:
 1. In the case where a preschool-age child is not accompanied by a person aged 6 or older (i.e. the child is travelling alone)
 2. In the case where an adult or a child is accompanied by more than two preschool-age children (a child ticket is required for the third and subsequent children. i.e. the first two preschool-age children are still free of charge)
 3. In the case where adults or children using a group ticket are accompanied by a preschool-age child or preschool-age children (i.e. the preschool-age child or children each require a separate child ticket as they are not included under the group ticket)
In the case where a preschool-age child occupies their own seat in a Limited Express train (A child basic fare ticket and a Limited Express ticket for the child are required.)

Who is required to purchase basic fare and Limited Express tickets?

Any passenger aged 6 or over is required to purchase a Limited Express ticket. In the case where a passenger is a preschool-age child (aged under 6), if he/she needs to occupy a seat in a Limited Express train, a child basic fare ticket and a Limited Express ticket for the child are required; however, if he/she does not need to occupy their own seat in a Limited Express train since he/she will be on the lap of a passenger who accompanies him/her, a basic fare ticket and a Limited Express ticket are not required.

Can I bring my bicycle into a train?

You can bring it into a train free of charge as long as it is disassembled or folded and stored in a dedicated bag. In the case where it may hinder transportation, e.g. when the train is crowded, you may not be allowed to bring it into the train.

Baggage that passengers can bring into a train is as follows:
In the case where the baggage may hinder transportation, e.g. when the train is crowded, we may not allow passengers to bring it into the train.

< Baggage that can be brought into trains free of charge >

Each passenger can bring into a train up to two pieces of baggage that he/she can carry and each of which has the total outside dimensions of 250 cm (length + width + height) or less and weighs 30 kg or less. The length must be 2 meters or less.

  • A bicycle must be disassembled or folded and stored in a dedicated bag.
  • Regarding sports goods, etc. that exceed the size limit of baggage that can be brought into trains free of charge, please contact a staff member.

The following items can also be brought into trains free of charge.

  • Wheelchairs (except large power-operated three-wheel/four-wheel vehicles other than wheelchairs)
  • Seeing-eye dogs, assistance dogs and hearing-ear dogs (those specified by the law only) (A passenger with a seeing-eye dog must have a user's certificate with him/her and a passenger with an assistance dog or a hearing-ear dog must have a certificate with him/her.)

When a passenger brings any small animal, including puppies, cats and pigeons, into a train, the passenger must observe the following rules and pay a baggage fee of 290 yen per carriage.

  • Bringing fierce animals and snakes into trains is prohibited.
  • The animal must be put into a carrier with total outside dimensions of around 90 cm (length + width + height) or less and a length of 70 cm or less.
  • The total weight of the carrier plus the animal must be 10 kg or less.
  • There is no possibility that the animal will hurt or disturb other passengers.

The following items are prohibited.

[3] Items that may disturb other passengers due to their dirtiness, odor, etc.
[4] Items that may damage train cars
[5] Other items that are specified by Kintetsu Railway

What is the KINTETSU RAIL PASS?

It is a value ticket for travelers who are visiting Japan for the purpose of sightseeing with the status of "Temporary Visitor" that is prescribed in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act of Japan.

What types of KINTETSU RAIL PASS are there?

There are KINTETSU RAIL PASS and KINTETSU RAIL PASS plus, which offer five-day unlimited rides on all Kintetsu lines, and KINTETSU RAIL PASS 1day, 2day, which are convenient for a tour around Nara, Osaka and Kyoto.

Where can I purchase a KINTETSU RAIL PASS?

In Japan, you can purchase a KINTETSU RAIL PASS at several Kintetsu stations such as Osaka-Namba, Osaka-Uehommachi, Osaka-Abenobashi, Kyoto, Kintetsu-Nara, Kintetsu-Nagoya and Tsu Stations; and Kansai International Airport; Chubu Centrair International Airport, etc. You can also purchase a KINTETSU RAIL PASS outside Japan.

Can I board a bus with a KINTETSU RAIL PASS?

With the KINTETSU RAIL PASS plus, you can unlimitedly board buses on the Nara Kotsu Bus, Mie Kotsu Bus and Toba City 'Kamome' (seagull) Bus Lines. With the KINTETSU RAIL PASS 1day, 2day, you can unlimitedly board buses on the Nara Kotsu Bus Line.

Can I board a Kintetsu Limited Express train with a KINTETSU RAIL PASS?

A KINTETSU RAIL PASS does not cover Limited Express tickets. To board a Limited Express train, be sure to purchase a Limited Express ticket additionally.

Can I receive a refund for a KINTETSU RAIL PASS?

In the case of purchase of an exchange voucher, only before you exchange the voucher for a pass, and in the case of purchase of a KINTETSU RAIL PASS, only before you start using it, you can receive a refund at the station or the travel agency where you purchased it, as long as it is valid. There is a handling charge.

We cannot reissue exchange vouchers or passes if they are stolen or lost.

Limited Express Ticket

What is the Limited Express?

The Kintetsu Limited Express only has reserved seats. It provides you with convenient means of travelling to your destination while comfortably relaxing in your reserved seat. To board a Limited Express train, you need to purchase a Limited Express ticket in addition to a basic fare ticket.

Where can I purchase Kintetsu Limited Express tickets?

Limited Express tickets can be purchased in the following ways.

What is a Limited Express ticket?

It is the ticket required when you board a Limited Express train, which only has reserved seats. The date of boarding for the Limited Express train that can be boarded with the ticket, the departure station, the departure time, the travel section and the seat location (seat number/car number) are indicated on it.

Can I change my reservation on the Kintetsu Limited Express train?

You can change your reservation one time only before departure of the relevant Limited Express.

Can I receive a refund for my Limited Express ticket?

You can receive a refund only before the departure of the relevant Limited Express. There is a handling charge.

Can I transfer between Kintetsu Limited Express trains?

If your journey involves transferring from one Limited Express train to another, if the connecting time at the transfer station is 30 minutes or less, a single Limited Express ticket for your entire journey will be issued.

What types of Limited Express trains are there?

There are various types of Kintetsu Limited Express trains, including the Sightseeing Limited Express "Shimakaze," operating between Osaka-Namba, Kyoto, and Kintetsu-Nagoya Stations and Mie (Ise-Shima); the "HINOTORI," operating mainly between Osaka-Namba Station and Kintetsu-Nagoya Station; the Sightseeing Limited Express "Blue Symphony," operating between Osaka-Abenobashi Station and Yoshino Station; and the Sightseeing Limited Express "AONIYOSHI," connecting Osaka-Namba Station, Kintetsu-Nara Station and Kyoto Station.

Basic fare ticket/IC card

Where can I purchase an IC card?

You can purchase an IC card at a ticket machine at a station.

You can purchase a basic fare ticket at a ticket machine at a station.

Can I change the purchased basic fare ticket?

If you wish to change the travel section/route after you started using the ticket, we can adjust the fare. Please contact a station staff member or a conductor. We ask you to pay the shortfall, if any, but do not refund any excess in payment, if any.

Can I receive a refund for the purchased basic fare ticket?

In the case of a basic fare ticket, we refund it if it is unused and valid. There is a handling charge. If you purchased the ticket at a travel agency, please contact the travel agency.

If I lose the purchased ticket, can it be reissued?

We cannot reissue the ticket if it is stolen or lost. Please purchase another ticket.

Are there any trains that I can board only with a KINTETSU RAIL PASS/basic fare ticket?

Yes, there are. There are several train types depending on the number of stop stations, including EXPRESS and LOCAL trains.

How can I adjust the fare if I rode past my original destination, for example?

If you rode past your destination or the balance of your IC card is insufficient, please adjust the fare at a Fare Adjustment Machine.

Support Service for Foreign Passengers

If I have difficulty in purchasing a ticket or boarding a train at a station or want to know sightseeing information along the Kintetsu lines, what should I do?

We have a Station Concierge who can speak foreign languages (mainly English and Chinese) near station gates.
[Stations that have station concierges] Osaka-Namba, Kintetsu-Nara, Kyoto and Kintetsu-Nagoya Stations
[Service hours] Vary according to the station, and whether a weekday or weekend/national holiday.
* Please note that stations with a Station Concierge are subject to change depending on the season and other factors.

At the following stations, a voice recognition translation service is available using a WiFi-connected tablet and a translation app. Please do not hesitate to ask a station staff member.

What facilities does each train have?

A Regular train has priority seats. Please allow those in need to be seated. Furthermore, on weekdays, each train from Kintetsu-Nara to Osaka-Namba Stations that arrives at Osaka-Namba Station before 9:30 has a women-only car.
